Frequently Asked Questions
How long have Shuttercraft been in business?
We have been in business since February 2003. We've grown rapidly since then as a result of investing in state of the art shutter manufacturing machinery from the US and a workforce dedicated to producing the highest quality shutters.
Do you offer a measuring and fitting service?
Shuttercraft can look after measuring and fitting for you if you are located within our service area (northwards of and including Dublin and Galway and also Co. Wicklow). Our consultants will call and show you samples , go through the various design options etc. Our installation experts are directly employed by us, are fully insured and will clean up when the work is done, leaving your home just as they found it.
Where are your shutters made?
We manufacture our own shutters here in Ireland using a premium quality hardwood grown in the Appalachian mountains of North America and milled in Northern California. We also import custom made shutters from a first class manufacturing facility in China in response to customer demand for a keener priced product.
Do you use different kinds of wood?
After many years using basswood, poplar and MDF, we have come to the conclusion that basswood is the best material to make plantation shutters from. It is both lightweight and stable, machines well and accepts a paint or stain finish equally well. We can also make a waterproof synthetic shutters for areas where excessive moisture is a problem.
A lot of shutters I've seen have a plastic look and feel? How are yours finished?
Our shutters are hand-sprayed to a 30% satin sheen finish which ensures that they look and feel as a real wood shutter should.
Is basswood a renewable material?
Each year the US grows almost three times as much basswood as it harvests so it is truly a renewable resource.
What eco-friendly practices does Shuttercraft implement?
We are constantly looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Our manufacturing facility is heated by burning the waste off-cuts instead of using electricity. Unlike most other shutter companies who use large amounts of cardboard to protect their shutters during transport, our shutters are factory-assembled in their frames and placed in our vans ready for fitting without the need for packaging.
How long will it take to have my shutters made and fitted?
Once we receive a 50% deposit, your order goes into production and will be ready for fitting within 2-3 weeks. Our imported shutters take a little longer at 7-8 weeks.
Are your shutters suitable for wet rooms?
Our Dawson shutter range is made from a synthetic material which is completely water resistant and easy to clean.
Can I fit the shutters myself?
Absolutely. Our sister company Shutterplus specialises in shutters ready made for easy self installation - www.shutterplus.ie.
Can shutters be fitted to tilt and turn windows?
On inward opening windows, the shutters are mounted outside the reveal on the face of the wall using an L frame. This is not quite as neat looking as an inside mount using a Z frame, so if you are planning on building and would like shutters, try to avoid windows that open inwards.
What else should I allow for in my new-build plans?
If you want an architrave-type frame on 4 sides of your window, avoid protruding window boards. Don't fit architraves as our frames incorporate a decorative moulded or a plain beaded architrave. Allow wall space between windows for the shutter panels to fold back onto.
How many shutter panels can I have in my window?
The style of your window normally dictates the number of panels. For example if you have a 4' wide window with 4 panes of glass, you can either put 2 x 2 foot panels of 4 x 1 foot panels. The price is the same regardless. 2 panels will allow more light in and give a better view out but will take up more wall space when folded back.
Which louvre size should I choose?
The louvre size should generally be in proportion to the size of the panel. In the above example, an 89mm or 115mm louvre might be too big for the 4 x 1 foot panels, so a better choice would be 46mm or 64mm. Apart from the asthetics, the larger louvre will allow more light in and give you a better view out. Again the price is the same regardless which size you choose.
What is the largest shutter panel you can make?
Our maximum width for individual panels is 650mm while the maximum height is 2700mm. Minimum width is 200mm and minimum length is 250mm.
Is there anywhere I can see your shutters fitted?
We don't have showrooms however we will shortly have a number of commercial locations where members of the public will be able to visit and see our shutters that have been custom made and fitted. If you have any questions not answered here, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
