Shutters are up to speed
If you have a draughty or overlooked window but don't want curtains in the way, then shutters could be the answer. After more than a decade in wood mouldings and decking, Leitrim man Hugo Clancy spotted a gap in the market, learned the ins and outs of shuttering, sourced his raw materials and set up his workshop.
Using North American basswood and durable nylon pins that allow the louvres to manoeuvre, he makes shutters to fit openings up to 2.5 metres high. You can get a good idea of the cost very quickly by logging on to the Shuttercraft web site, where you'll see a range of styles and get very comprehensive measuring instructions.
And there's a table showing the cost of each panel: for example if your window is 1m high and 1.2m wide you can get three panels measuring 1m by 400mm that will each cost €161.65. These can fold back into the window reveal, and can be sprayed any colour.
If that suits, phone Hugo who will come out and take your vital statistics; about three weeks later he'll return to fit them for a charge of €140. Shuttercraft, Meenagh, Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim. Tel. 071 985 4047

Shutter those windows
WITH over 11 years experience in the art of creating wood mouldings and joinery, Hugo Clancy noticed a gap in the market for plantation shutters. Up until recently, demand here for these very American-style window coverings was being met by manufacturers in the UK.
With the help of The Leitrim County Enterprise Board, Clancy sourced northern basswoood (the essential wood for authentic designs) from California, and started making shutters in his own home in Kiltyclogher. From that gem of an idea, a thriving business has grown and now Shuttercraft sells to the UK as well as to the home market. Hidden away among north Leitrim's beautiful forests, access to the company couldn't be easier - and you don't have to hop in the car.
"The company's web site is the main point of contact for potential customers and it contains measuring information as well as prices," explains Clancy.

Leitrim Shuttercraft closes gap in window market
Shutters have long been one of the most elegant, cost-effective and stylish window covers available. A popular alternative to blinds and curtains, not only are they extremely durable, but they require little or no maintenance and can be painted or stained to blend in with any style of decor, from traditional to contemporary.
Until recently, demand for these American-style window coverings was met mainly by overseas manufacturers but this situation looks set to change with the establishment of a new Irish company, Shuttercraft.
The company was founded by Hugo Clancy, a Leitrim native with more than 11 years experience in the wood mouldings and decking business. He noticed a gap in the market for Irish-manufactured shutters. With the help of a grant from the Leitrim County Enterprise Board, Clancy sourced solid Grade A North American basswood from California and brought it all the way to Kiltyclogher, where he set up his new business.
Clancy and his team produce plantation shutters in a choice of styles; a full height single panel, a cafe style shutter panel that covers the bottom half of a window only, and a tier-on-tier design where the window opening is divided into two tiers of shutter panels, allowing full light to enter through the top of the window while the bottom tier remains closed.
Thanks to the internet, Shuttercraft's remote location amont the forests and lakes of north Leitrim has not adversly affected sales. The firm's website, at www.shutters.ie, provides the main point of contact with customers and contains measuring information as well as prices, so visitors can easily calculate the cost of having shutters fitted to any window in their home.
Prices for the plantation shutters vary according to their size and design, although Clancy says prices are in the region of €35 per square foot. This includes a standard paint or stain finish.
For an extra €40 per colour, the company will spray the shutters to any colour specified by the customer.
Fitting costs are €140 for the first window and €70 for subsequent windows.
